I'm coming to you, the people, for some input today. I'm in a dilemna. See, I'm doing a little purging in my kitchen cabinets and trying to decide what to keep. I have a little food processor (I think it was a wedding gift), that I've hardly used. How badly can I possibly need this thing if I've only used it a time or two in 6 1/2 years?
I find I can chop most things almost as fast with a knife (I've spent a lot of my life chopping and have gotten pretty quick now), and it's a lot faster and easier to clean a knife than to dissassemble and clean a food processor. But maybe there's some wonderful use for it I just haven't discovered because I don't think to use it. Maybe I'll regret it if I purge this thing! SO- what I need to know is:
What do you use a food processor for?
C'mon people! I really need you to tell me!

Mine may be a bit bigger but here's what I use it for.
1. I make dough with it (bread, pizza, etc)
2. I shred LARGE amounts of cheese and freeze the shredded cheese
3. when I make roast or soup any time I have to do the carrots, celery, onion I do them all quickly in the food processor. Although I did just find out that at trader joe's you can get all of that chopped up and in a container for about 1.99 so I may switch to doing that.
Also, Mine comes all apart and goes right in the dishwasher.
I use it at least once a week. it's my favorite appliance besides my oven/stove.
if that's all you use it for, how do you use it once a week? Do you make dough that often?
The onions and celery is a good point.
the onions, carrot, celery. I still wonder if other than the bread dough (which I found now at trader joes) if I couldn't live with just a salad shooter or something.
I make smoothies and breakfst drinks with mine. I don't so much use it to chop up veggies as I agree it is easier with a knife. For about 6 months, I made homemade baby food with it too. I also have a braun hand held chopper deal that is much smaller, easier to clean and works quickly too. I am a food processor kind of gal!
I only have a little (2 cup) processor to make baby food with. :) But I've seen regular food processors used to make salad dressings on the food network - they dump in the ingredients, mince them up, then drizzle olive oil or something in from the opening on top. I've also seen them make pie crust with one! It looked pretty easy to keep it flaky and not over-stirred. :)
I say chuck it. How often are you going to do big chunks of cheese? Besides, 1) Addie will be old enough soon to labor over a grater, 2) hand-chopped vegetables are more beautiful to look at, 3) the chopping is therapeutic (for me), 4) you can do bread in a stand mixer - which is what I do - or even a hand-held, 5) knives take up less space.
We use ours ONLY for making pesto sauce. It's great for the grinding of the basil. We've contemplated getting rid of it too. I sort of feel like you need a good sized one to make it more worth your while to use than a knife.
well, i've never used one. i'll be honest. BUT, i think if you do decide to purge it you should send it to me. i feel sure that i can be the next Emeril with such a tool. i'm certain that i've seen recipes that made me long for this particular appliance...MAYBE YOU COULD COME OUT WITH IT???! :)
I chucked mine quite some time ago, and have never missed it. However, I don't cook (at least according to your dad). Seriously, it was such a pain to clean and took so much room that it just wasn't earning its space any more.
Mom
uh... I never use mine
LOL!!!
actually maybe if you gave me yours...i would get motivated...
nah:)
wow- I have two and I love them. I have a mini one and I use it to make pesto, make my own peanut butter and honey butter. It is so great for mixing sauces. I have a huge one too and I love it for gratting cheese- it is so easy and we eat tacos at least once a week. I also use it for making pie crusts, etc. Don't get rid of it!
